Born in Sydney in 1920, Australian artist Robert Klippel is regarded as the leading sculptor of his time, renowned for creating intricate and abstract sculptures from an array of ‘found’ industrial materials.

No. 710, Windmill is from the artist’s celebrated late series of assemblages, in which he employed wooden moulds salvaged from The Eveleigh railway yards in nearby Redfern. The industrial forms in this work - originally designed as part of the casting process for cogs, flywheels, engine blocks and other machine parts - take on a dynamic and almost organic energy.

Through the imaginative adaptation of discarded industrial materials into sculptural form, Robert Klippel’s extraordinary inventiveness offers a novel perspective on emerging possibilities in the fields of design, engineering, art and technology.
